Thought this cartoon was interesting

It was made back in 1934. It's amazing how history repeats itself. The powers that be honestly believe that the reason that the depression got as bad as it did was because they didn't start doing this immediately once all of the bad stuff started happening during The Great Depression. That's why they're spending so much money right now. Unfortunately, it wasn't the massive spending that got us out of The Great Depression. It arguably extended it for a few more years. The only thing that pulled us out was WW2. Hopefully it won't take another war of that scale to save us this time.

Really makes one pause ...
Yep. Throughout history when resources become increasingly scarce the result is war.

Thing is, in this day and age war can mean the end of life as we know it.

Hi, You're comment that massive government spending extended the 1930's depression is possibly true - but is that the only metric to measure with - the government spending (and creation of the alphabet agencies) caused jobs and stabilised the economy (although admittedly in a depressed state).

Is preventing a depression getting worse, at the expense of a longer, but shallower, depression a good thing?

I think this might open up a wider question of whether the economy's should always be growing and getting bigger - one that I'm not really in a position to answer.
